EPISODE #35 (February 27th, 2006)
Thanks to the LinuxCaffe for letting us shoot inside; even though it was a little dark in there, we produced a fun and lively show for you - and Jeff does a segment from Halifax about external hard drives. Enjoy!

Re: How many Mac users use a firewall or anti-virus...
By default, Macs ship with all ports closed (Firewall) and all services disabled.. They may not know that they're running a firewall, but they are..
From Apple's MacOS X page -
Secure Default Configuration
Apple’s conservative approach to security protects your Mac from attacks over private or public networks, such as the Internet, right out of the box. All the communication ports are closed and all native services — personal file sharing, Windows file sharing, personal web sharing, remote login, FTP access, remote Apple events and printer sharing — are turned off by default.
re: anti-virus? Back in the MacOS 9 days (and as far back as System 7) I ran Virex and told everyone I knew that they should as well.. Started with Virex 4 when it was still made by Datawatch ;-) Newer versions, unfortunately have been problematic at best, so I've had to give up on Virex, now by NAI...
Now, I'm using ClamXav (Free!), set to scan my Desktop and Mail attachments folders. (And yes, I tell all my Mac using friends they should as well) Free, unobtrusive, and kept well up to date (definitions for oompa-loompa were quickly added)
Also use a great tool called "Little Snitch" to monitor connection attempts going out from my Mac.
Just my $0.02

Thx for the update - I've heard of Little Snitch, great tool ;).
Now we have to get Mike into Law School!

I'd like to see mike with a few beers in him. That'd be a VERY entertaining episode.

Blahber commented: "I'd like to see mike with a few beers in him."
Last time I checked there were already one too many vlogs like that. Diggnation comes to mind. Friends don't let friends vlog drunk.

Dear Amber,
You are gorgeous.

"AlbinoSheep.com" (For Sale) was displayed in your cast & should be Albinoblacksheep.com.
Posted by: Dino SoCal | February 28, 2006 at 10:08 AM
Awww. Amber I caught you! I heard you drop the f-bomb. I must say ,I'm shocked, I didn't think you used words like that :-)
Approx. 14:34 minutes in.

Don't drink before a show.
Posted by: Jim | February 28, 2006 at 03:47 PM
Jason Brown,
I think she actually said "I'm just bugging you...". But it may be the other thing...who knows! LOL...I guess only Amber knows really.
Posted by: C. Flowers | February 28, 2006 at 04:19 PM
Amber did not drop an f-bomb!
Trust me! I listened to it many times in editing to make sure.
She says "I'm just bugging you" but because she is laughing it comes out sounding a little "off".

Nice try guys - but Brian is correct, no F-bomb and no drinking on this ep!
-Amber
P.S. It's Albinoblacksheep.com ;).
Posted by: Amber Mac | February 28, 2006 at 06:24 PM
Dang it, I thought I got you. I listened to it a few more time too. I guess she didn't say it. Ignorance was bliss, it was funnier when I thought you had.
We'll get you over to dark-side someday Amber.

Jeff, any thoughts on the different memory sizes of external hard drives and if that is an important factor to consider before buying?
Another great episode guys...
Posted by: Peter | February 28, 2006 at 11:13 PM
I would always buy an external hard drive that was at the very least bigger than my biggest current hard drive (e.g. my desktop or laptop internal drives). That way, you can take full advantage of backing up your whole hard drive, or even making a bootable copy of it (so that you can boot from your external drive, instead of your internal one).
So I would say to buy something around 1.5 times the size of your current largest hard drive, just to account for future drives (and bigger is usually better here).
If you think you'll be backing up all your hard drives onto the same external drive then I'd suggest an external drive that is bigger than the sum of all your other hard drives (and, again, you might want to have some extra room here too).

sorry jeff, i meant memory (mb cache) as opposed to hard drive space (GBs). For instance, some hard drives appear only to have 8mb cache while others have 16mb cache. http://www.edealinfo.com/DDCateg/harddrives.shtml#20060228062
Is this an important consideration?

Concerning Ricky Gervais:
Content wants to be free.
Check on mininova. ;-)
To throw in my two cents worth:
Overrated, not worth the money and definitely a bad precedent.
Commercials are ok and I would donate to support the shows I like.
Great show, keep them coming!

Just like to drop by and say that you guys have put together an amazing show. And, keeping it free is a big plus. This is my first episode and I'm looking forward to the next few eps.
Cya!
